Requirement
The UoC shall ensure that all processing effluent is treated to minimise biosecurity and environmental risks.
How Do I Interpret This Requirement?
-
An appropriate effluent treatment should be able to eliminate or reduce to acceptable levels the discharge of (amongst others):
-
Organic matter: measured, for example, as the reduction of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) or Total Suspended Solids (TSS) after treatment.
-
Nutrients: measured, for example, as the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorous after treatment.
-
Pathogenic microorganisms: measured, for example, as the reduction of microbial counts after treatment.
-
Oils and greases.
-
Evidence of Implementation
-
An effluent monitoring plan appropriate for the type and amount of processing effluent discharged.
-
Including the parameters, frequency of monitoring and acceptable limits.
-
Analysis results of the parameters included in the effluent monitoring plan.
-
Corrective actions when analysis results exceed acceptable levels.
Auditors Should Confirm
-
Effluent monitoring plan has been developed and implemented.
-
This includes monitoring analysis results.
-
Corrective actions taken when analysis results exceed acceptable levels.
