Requirement
The UoC shall handle, use, store and dispose of chemicals according to the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provided by the supplier.
The UoC shall not discharge effluent containing chemicals without adequate treatment.
How Do I Interpret This Requirement?
-
The adequacy of a treatment depends on the types of chemicals found in the effluent, such as heavy metals, organic compounds, acids and bases.
-
To determine the most adequate treatment, it is essential to understand the following characteristics of the effluent:
-
Chemical composition (organic vs. inorganic, hazardous vs. non-hazardous).
-
pH levels (acidic, neutral or alkaline).
-
Solubility (dissolved, suspended or emulsified).
-
Toxicity (bioaccumulative, carcinogenic, etc.).
-
-
-
Based on the above characteristics, examples of treatments that might be used are:
-
Physical-Chemical Treatment: pH neutralisation, coagulation and flocculation, chemical precipitation, adsorption, membrane filtration, electrochemical treatment, solvent extraction.
-
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs): ozonation, ultraviolet + hydrogen peroxide.
-
Biological Treatment: aerobic and anaerobic treatment, bioaugmentation.
-
Evidence of Implementation
-
Presence of treatment method for effluents containing chemicals.
-
Including the rationale for determining the most adequate method.
-
Auditors Should Confirm
-
Through site inspection the presence of a treatment method for effluents containing chemicals.
