The UoC shall not injure or cause mortality of mammals, elasmobranchs or reptiles (excluding vermin). An exception applies for occasional incidents where: a. injured animals are unlikely to recover; or b. immediate human safety is threatened; or c. legal requirements mandate emergency euthanasia.
How Do I Interpret This Requirement?
-
Mortalities include animals intentionally killed through lethal action, as well as accidental deaths through entanglement or other means.
-
Occasional incidents of injury or mortality will be rare and only occur in exceptional circumstances which are necessary for the reasons outlined in Indicators 2.3.2 and 2.3.3. All other feasible measures should be pursued prior to causing injuries or mortality.
Evidence of Implementation
-
A list of Threatened Species, mammals, elasmobranchs and reptiles which are present in the vicinity of the site should be presented.
-
Records of any interactions, injuries and mortalities to/of these species should be maintained.
-
Where there are occasional incidents of interactions with or mortalities of Threatened Species, evidence has been maintained to demonstrate that the incidents will not affect the population status.
-
A written statement has also been obtained from a registered veterinarian or the responsible authorities to confirm at least one of the three points (a-c) in Indicator 2.3.2 has been met.
-
Records demonstrating that if there are occasional injuries or mortalities of mammals, elasmobranchs or reptiles, the incidents meet the exception in Indicator 2.3.3.
Auditors Should Confirm
-
Records of interactions with Threatened Species, mammals, elasmobranchs and reptiles have been maintained. Specifically, records of any injuries or mortality.
-
Written statements are present from a registered veterinarian or the responsible authorities, in accordance with Indicators 2.3.2, if mortalities of Threatened Species have occurred.
-
The statement confirms that at least one of the three points (a-c) in Indicator 2.3.2 have been met.
-
Records have been presented to demonstrate that if there are occasional injuries or mortalities of mammals, elasmobranchs or reptiles, the incidents meet the exception in Indicator 2.3.3.
